How it works
AFT stands for Advanced Fluorescent Technology, delivering a series of gentle light pulses across the treatment area. The light passes into the deeper layers, where it is absorbed by the pigment itself rather than the skin around it. The pigment breaks up and your body clears it naturally over the following weeks, with darker patches often lifting to the surface and flaking away.
What to expect
A course of around five sessions is typical, with most people seeing improvement after the first. Each session is comfortable, usually described as a light elastic band snap against the skin. Immediately afterwards, brown spots often look temporarily darker and the skin may be a little flushed. This settles within a day or so and is a sign the treatment is working.
Getting the best from it
Pigmentation treatment works best alongside good daily sun protection, otherwise new pigment simply replaces what has been cleared. Recent sun exposure or a tan means we may need to postpone, since treating recently tanned skin carries a risk of uneven results. We will talk through medical skincare that supports and extends your results.
Cost
Pigmentation and sun damage treatment starts from £100 per session, with birthmark treatment also from £100. Consultations with Dr Patel are £25, paid when you book. NHS staff receive 20% off a first treatment and 10% off treatments thereafter.

No. Recent sun exposure or a tan means we will rearrange, since treating recently tanned skin risks uneven results.
Existing pigment that is cleared does not return, though new pigment can develop with further sun exposure, which is why daily SPF matters.
